Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose has been my favourite player since I can remember. He’s had a rocky and unfortunate NBA career with multiple injuries which were described as ‘career ending’. But this didn’t stop Rose from continuing with the sport he dominated in his early years. This relates to me and is probably a big reason why I am a big fan.

Rose started basketball young and went into college very athletic and determined. Rose led his team to the most wins in the team’s history with a record of 38 out of 40 games and into the finals where they won the 2007 finals at the buzzer (rose sinking the winning shot). The college even retired the number 25 because of his success! This is where I first became interested in Rose as did so many other people.

By this time many scouts were also interested and looking at Rose. He was scouted for a uni but opted out after the first year to go into the NBA draft in 2008. I was very excited to see him compete in the NBA and was over the moon that my favourite team the Chicago Bulls picked him as the overall number 1 pick in the 2008 draft. Rose unfortunately injured his knee in the preseason which saw him miss out on a number of pre-season games. He recovered just in time for his first NBA appearance where he was awarded rookie of the month for 3 months straight. Rose also won rookie of the year that year showing his determination coming back from injury.

In 2010 more injuries to the knee and ankle halted Derrick Rose for a lot of the season. Despite missing many games. Been very young at the time, I would have personally questioned if this was a good idea if i was him but he carried on playing the sport he loved. Once 2011 came around Rose was fighting fit and helped lead his team to win 62 out of 82 season games. Rose also joined the record books with only two other people in history by scoring 2000 points and 600 assists in one season. At the end of the season Rose was awarded the MVP award becoming the youngest player to do so at the age of 22. Unfortunately the next year wasn’t as successful as Rose gained a serious knee injury close to the playoffs. Rose missed the rest of the season and also the 2012-13 season because of this nearly career ending injury which was a huge loss for him and the team. The next season was again filled with problems for Rose. He can back not as athletic and much slower that his MVP year because of the injuries and surgeries . Things got worse as half way through the season Rose torn his ongoing troubled knee requiring more surgery.

2015-16 would be the last year Rose would play for the Chicago Bulls as more injuries occurred. Rose fractured a bone in his face preseason which meant wearing a face mask and although he continued to play, the face mask was a distraction. With so many injuries and a player being so young it is questionable if it is really worth it. I have had many injuries and surgeries from sports and Roses determination personally helped me get back into sport. Would you have the determination to keep doing what you love if you were in his position?
